What building-material suppliers ship
The load may be ordinary dimensional lumber—2x4 through 2x12 in 8, 12, or 16 foot lengths—or engineered stock such as LVL, Parallam, and I-joists. Suppliers also move 4x8 and 5x9 OSB or plywood, pre-framed wall panels 8–10 feet tall and 8–28 feet wide, roof trusses with 12–60-plus-foot spans, custom glulam beams, fiber-cement siding, and occasional drywall lifts. A full 48-foot flatbed of 2x6 lumber can run 42,000–46,000 lb; OSB can reach 48,000 lb before pallets, dunnage, and tarp weight are counted.
Trusses are light per piece but frequently exceed the 8 foot 6 inch legal width when bundled flat. Confirm bundle width, not just the individual truss, before booking. A step deck may be the practical answer for height and securement. Long glulams may need a legal overlength review, while wall panels need a stable, protected platform rather than maximum payload.
Sourcing regions and transit patterns
Pacific Northwest mills and distributors supply large volumes of spruce-pine-fir lumber from British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon into the Midwest and Southeast. Those lanes commonly run 1,800–2,700 miles, with intermodal or reload activity feeding flatbed deliveries from inland yards. A Vancouver-to-Chicago or Portland-to-Atlanta move is often seven to ten transit days after loading, depending on border paperwork, mountain weather, and reload capacity. A carrier may be easy to find outbound from a major reload market but scarce for the return.
Southern Yellow Pine originates heavily in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi and distributes nationally. A mill-to-Texas, Carolinas, or Midwest load may cover 600–1,200 miles and turn in two to four days, but spring construction demand quickly consumes those trucks. Regional sourcing changes both lead time and price: PNW freight depends on long-haul capacity and border timing, while Southern Pine competes for the same Southeast flatbeds serving roof trusses, steel, and manufactured housing.
Ask whether the quoted pickup is at a sawmill, reload yard, or distributor. A reload may have a forklift and a short appointment; a mill may have a strict shipping window, bundled export paperwork, and a scale queue. The difference affects detention and the driver’s next load.
Why moisture and specialty products matter
Moisture is the dominant claim category. A rain event through a loose tarp can swell OSB edges, delaminate panels, stain finished siding, or distort a framed wall panel. A wet unit load can represent $15,000–$50,000 in damage and a lost framing sequence. Use a waterfall tarp application that sheds water off both sides without pooling; loads over 40 feet commonly require two tarps with a controlled overlap. Treated lumber may require a vapor barrier or the shipper’s specified wrap, not simply a canvas tarp.
Fiber-cement siding is heavy for its footprint and fragile at the edges. It should ship flat on the manufacturer’s pallets with corner protection; standing bundles on edge can crack boards before the truck leaves. LVL beams are structurally strong but extremely moisture-sensitive at exposed faces and ends, so full wrap is required when the shipper specifies it. Structural insulated panels are large and light, with foam cores and finished faces that puncture under a fork or strap. Keep them flat, use broad blocking, and do not let a chain or binder touch the panel skin.
Banding and facility types
Steel banding is expected for unit loads above 2,000 lb. Poly banding is suitable for lighter bundles when the shipper allows it. Band at least once every 4 feet and at both ends, then inspect every band at pickup. A cut or buckled band is a rejection risk because the carrier cannot safely repair a structural unit load without shipper approval.
At a lumber yard, a forklift and dock usually make loading straightforward. Millwork facilities vary: some use overhead lifts for LVL or glulam. An active construction site almost never has a dock. It may have a telehandler, boom truck, or nothing capable of unloading an 80,000 lb combination. Soft ground can trap a loaded flatbed; overhead utilities and residential turns can make the published address unusable.
Jobsites, seasons, and capacity
Boom trucks commonly cost $150–$300 per hour with an operator. Confirm who unloads, whether driver assist is permitted, and whether the site crew is scheduled—not merely “available.” Common failures include rain damage, a blocked access lane, a missing site supervisor, an operator who starts two hours late, and trusses delivered to the wrong building footprint on a multi-building project.
Nationally, a practical planning benchmark is roughly 28,000–32,000 flatbed loads per week touching lumber and building products during the busiest spring weeks, compared with approximately 15,000–18,000 weekly loads in the slowest January and February weeks. These are market planning ranges, not a guaranteed industry census, and they explain why a lane that normally covers in 48 hours may need a week of lead time in April.
In the Midwest, spring framing and storm-repair demand can reduce available trucks by 20–30% from winter levels. The Southeast has a broader construction season, but Southern Pine, trusses, and manufactured-home freight compete for capacity; spot availability can fall 15–25% in March through May. Spot rates commonly rise 15–30% during peak windows. A dealer with April deliveries should reserve trucks in February, before serial numbers and site schedules become urgent.
Scheduled visibility for jobsites

Worked example: wall panels to a homebuilding site
A manufacturer ships a 44,000 lb wall-panel load 120 miles to an active homebuilding site. There is no dock. The site supervisor confirms that a telehandler and qualified operator start at 7:00 a.m.; the driver is instructed to use the south gate and remove the tarp only after the machine is positioned.
The driver departs at 5:00 a.m. and arrives at 7:15, after the site’s first safe operating check. The telehandler is waiting, the ground is firm, and the foreman verifies the panel sequence. Offload takes 90 minutes. The driver leaves at 8:45 with no detention. The result depended on a confirmed window, verified equipment, route instructions, condition photos, and a tarp plan—not simply on finding a 48-foot trailer.
