What steel service centers ship

Steel freight is sold by heat, grade, gauge, and delivery commitment, but it moves by weight and geometry. A service center may ship hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils weighing 15,000–50,000 lb each, cut-to-length plate, master coil, W- and S-shapes, angles up to 60 feet, Grade 60 rebar, hollow structural sections, and galvanized or aluminized products. A 48-foot flatbed might carry two 23,500 lb coils, while a bundle of #8 rebar is long, relatively light, and awkward at a construction site.

The bill of lading should identify coil orientation, piece count, heat or lot numbers, tarp requirement, and loading method. Structural beams and raw rebar generally travel bare. Galvanized, painted, and coated products need tarp coverage to prevent water staining and corrosion. Cut plate can be crane-loaded in a stack; a master coil needs a cradle or rack designed for its diameter and eye orientation.

Inside the service center

A service center is not simply a warehouse with a shipping door. Slitting lines cut master coils into narrower mults; cut-to-length lines uncoil, level, shear, and stack plate to order. Pickling and oiling lines remove scale and apply a protective oil film. Galvanizing lines run steel through a zinc bath and finishing equipment, while painted or aluminized lines add coatings that are vulnerable to moisture, edge impact, and dirty dunnage.

These production steps create real loading windows. A crane may be tied up feeding a slitter or moving a coil through line changeover, so a truck arriving early cannot necessarily be loaded early. A cut-to-length stack may not be released until the last sheet is inspected and banded. A coil scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. pickup can be physically inside the building but unavailable until the line finishes its run.

Shippers should time trucking against the production schedule, not a sales promise alone. Ask when the coil is released from quality control, when the crane is available, and when shifts change. Build a 30–60 minute check-in buffer, but do not book six hours early unless the yard can stage the truck. The production planner, shipping clerk, crane operator, and carrier need the same appointment.

Why this freight differs

Most service centers load with bridge cranes rated from 5 to 50 tons. The crane crew needs a booked window, not a truck “sometime Tuesday.” Coil racks may be carrier-furnished or mill-owned; coil saddles and bolsters support the load across the trailer frame. A driver who arrives with a 30,000 lb rack for a 46,000 lb coil will be refused, even if the tractor and trailer have capacity.

Coils load eye-to-side when the eye runs across the trailer and the coil sits in a properly rated cradle. Eye-to-sky places the eye vertical; it can be correct for a specific mill rack but changes chain paths and roll behavior. Never let a driver improvise orientation. Grade 70 chain, commonly 3/8-inch or larger, is the normal steel securement choice because webbing can be cut by a sharp edge. Aggregate working load limit must equal at least 50% of cargo weight, with edge protection wherever chain contacts steel.

Cross-docking mixed steel

Mixed steel orders need a load plan before a truck is sent to the dock. A pair of 20,000 lb eye-to-side coils should not be treated as interchangeable with a 16,000 lb plate stack and 10,000 lb beam bundle. Put the heaviest concentrated weight over the trailer’s support structure, keep the center of gravity low, and separate products that require different securement. Coil racks and saddles must not be blocked by a beam bundle, and long beams cannot become an improvised brace for round cargo.

At a cross-dock, confirm a 20- or 30-ton bridge crane, a forklift rated for the heaviest plate stack, and enough dock length to turn a 60-foot angle bundle. The receiver must unload in the planned order. If the coil is buried behind plate, a crane may have to reposition a 10,000 lb stack before reaching the rack. List each product’s piece count, weight, orientation, tarp status, and unload sequence on the BOL.

What goes wrong

  • A coil seated on an undersized rack can roll or shift at highway speed. Binders cannot restrain a coil that has begun rolling; this is a fatality-risk event, not an ordinary cargo claim.
  • A crane operator calls out or production runs late and the plant has no backup. The driver loses a shift, then detention cascades through every appointment behind that truck.
  • A carrier brings the wrong rack rating, the wrong number of chains, or no steel tarp. The load is refused after the truck has already burned the appointment.
  • A busy mill’s first delay pushes later trucks into shift change, creating hours of avoidable waiting.

Scheduled visibility in steel terms

Worked example: two coils to a stamping plant

A Chicago service center ships two 23,500 lb hot-rolled coils, 72 inches OD, eye-to-side, to a Pittsburgh stamping plant 460 miles away. The order is released after inspection Monday afternoon. Dispatch books a 48-foot flatbed, two 10-ton coil racks, four 3/8-inch Grade 70 chains with edge protection, and steel tarps.

At 4:00 p.m. Monday, the shipping clerk confirms Tuesday’s 10:00 a.m. crane appointment with the crane supervisor, not just the dock office. The supervisor confirms the bridge crane will be free after a 9:30 line changeover and that two operators will be present. Dispatch calls the carrier and verifies each rack’s stamped 10-ton rating, rack width, saddle condition, and compatibility with a 72-inch OD coil. The driver also confirms chain binders, edge protectors, coil blocking, and tarp size on the pre-trip checklist.

The driver checks in at 9:45. Coil one is lifted at 10:05 and coil two at 10:25. Before leaving, he checks that both coils are against rack stops, chains have the intended lead angle, binders are locked, edge protection is between chain and steel, no chain crosses a sharp flange, and aggregate WLL meets the 50% cargo rule. He checks tarp coverage, photographs rack and securement, and signs the weight ticket. Chaining takes 20 minutes and tarping 15; departure is 11:05.

The truck arrives Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. after one overnight. The planned cost is $2,200 linehaul plus a $150 tarp fee. There is no detention because the rack, production release, crane crew, and window were confirmed before dispatch.
