Lumber and Building Materials on Flatbed: Tarping, Banding, and Jobsite Delivery

Lumber freight is packaged for a yard, not automatically for a truck. Dimensional lumber commonly travels in banded units of 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, or 2x10 boards at 96-inch lengths. Engineered freight includes LVL beams and I-joists. OSB and plywood are stacked in 4x8 sheets; wall panels arrive pre-framed at 8–10 feet tall; roof trusses can exceed 40 feet; log-home packages combine long, irregular members.

A full dimensional-lumber flatbed commonly runs 42,000–46,000 pounds. OSB can reach 48,000 pounds on a 48-foot trailer. That leaves little room for a heavy rack, extra dunnage, or wet material. Weigh the complete shipment and check axle placement before final banding.

Moisture prevention

Wood absorbs moisture rapidly through end grain and bundle gaps. A rain event without coverage can swell panels, warp boards, stain surfaces, and create a $15,000–$50,000 claim on one load. Specify full waterfall coverage using 24-ounce vinyl. Loads over 40 feet usually need two tarps so the center seam does not leave a gap.

Place the front tarp first and the rear tarp over it with at least a 12-inch overlap. Secure every usable D-ring along both rails. The cover must avoid billowing, dragging near wheels, and rubbing against sharp bands or board corners. Pressure-treated lumber should be wrapped in poly sheeting before tarping when the receiver requires a vapor barrier; chemicals and prolonged trapped moisture can damage finishes. Banding and loading

Steel banding is commonly 3/4 inch or 1-1/4 inch wide and is preferred for heavy units. Poly banding suits lighter, stable bundles when the packaging specification allows it. A practical package rule is one band every 4 feet of length, plus one at each end. Inspect for broken, rusted, or loose bands before signing. A damaged band should be replaced before the truck leaves rather than explained after delivery.

Most yards load with a forklift from a dock or ramp. The driver needs room to place dunnage and inspect the underside. Trusses and wall panels may require a crane. Confirm lifting points and whether a step deck is needed for height or width. Do not let a loader improvise around fragile web members or place a chain over an unsupported panel.

Truss loads need a separate plan

Roof trusses are not simply long lumber bundles. A shallow 12-pitch truss may be manageable on a standard 48-foot flatbed, while steep-pitch designs create a tall, unstable profile. Common spans run from 24 feet to 80 feet. Once stacked and folded for shipment, a bundle can be 14–28 feet wide or more across its spread, depending on the design, quantity, and packaging method. Confirm whether the quoted width is the folded bundle width, the individual truss span, or the assembled roof footprint; those are different permit measurements.

Trusses are normally bundled with wood spacers between web members so the webs do not rub, buckle, or transfer chain pressure through a single point. Spacers must remain aligned during loading. Use dunnage beneath the bundle at engineered support locations, not only at the two ends. Chains should bear on protected, strong points and never crush a web member. Steel banding holds the bundle together; it is not a replacement for truck tiedowns.

An overwidth bundle above 8 feet 6 inches generally requires an oversize review, permit, warning devices, and sometimes escort vehicles. State rules control, including whether a particular agricultural or construction exemption applies. A 14-foot folded bundle can also need a route survey for bridge clearances, traffic lanes, and overhead utilities. A step deck may lower the center of gravity and help with a tall pitch, but it does not eliminate a width permit.

Trailer choice should follow the loading drawing. A stretch flatbed may be needed for an 80-foot span; a step deck may provide better clearance around a tall folded pack; a spread-axle trailer may be useful at a permitted weight or a site with strict axle distribution. Confirm deck length, stake-pocket layout, tarp size, legal axle weights, and whether the carrier has the flags, banners, and escort coordination required by the route. Do not accept a standard flatbed booking until the manufacturer’s bundle dimensions are available.

Jobsite delivery

The destination may have no dock, forklift, or paved approach. A loaded combination can weigh near 80,000 pounds. Soft soil, fresh fill, or an ungraded road can sink a trailer or prevent a turn. Ask for ground conditions, gate width, turning radius, overhead utilities, low branches, and a site contact who can direct the truck. Residential streets can be more restrictive than the origin yard.

Confirm who unloads before tendering. If the driver must assist, agree to $75–$200 per hour and define whether that includes unbanding, tarp removal, dunnage, or carrying material. If the site supplies a boom truck, confirm its arrival window; a boom truck with operator commonly costs $150–$300 per hour. A missed window can create both rental expense and carrier detention. Manual labor should never be used to move an 8,000-pound bundle simply because a forklift was not scheduled.

Drywall and gypsum freight

Drywall, gypsum board, and cement board need a different handling plan from dimensional lumber. Panels are fragile, edges crush easily, and a fork tine through a stack can create damage that is not visible until installation. Ship sheets horizontally on a level deck, supported continuously by flat dunnage. Do not stand ordinary panels on edge unless the manufacturer’s packaging and receiver specifically permit it.

Keep gypsum dry, but do not pull a tarp tight against the panel face. Tight vinyl can press grit into the paper, abrade a finished surface, and trap condensation between the cover and the stack. Use clean spacers, a protective top sheet or slip layer approved by the shipper, and enough air space to keep the cover off the face while still preventing rain entry. Any tarp must be secured so it cannot flap against the board corners.

Inspect wrapped stacks for crushed corners, torn paper, wet edges, and broken pallet supports before signing. Photograph the load before covering, including any pre-existing fork marks. Water-stained gypsum may be rejected even when the stack is structurally intact; a claim can include rehandling, disposal, replacement panels, and jobsite labor. Specify whether the receiver wants full coverage, an enclosed trailer, or a weather window instead of leaving “protect from rain” to interpretation.

Final records

Keep a load sheet with piece count, bundle dimensions, total weight, tarp instruction, banding condition, and unloading equipment. At pickup, photograph exposed edges and the completed tarp. At delivery, record the site contact, weather, and whether the crew accepted the bands and cover. For mixed building packages, separate the delivery sequence before loading. Bundles needed first should remain accessible without removing the entire tarp, while fragile wall panels should not be buried beneath heavy dimensional units. Mark each bundle with project, elevation, and unload order. A ten-minute conversation at the yard can prevent an hour of rehandling at a constrained jobsite, where the only available telehandler may be scheduled for another trade.
